The UK Parliament is Encouraged to Switch to a Vegan Diet!

In last week's blog post I talked about the rise of plant-based food in people's diets. I found this topic so interesting that I decided to do some more research on veganism and its latest advancements.

Whilst doing some digging on the internet I stumbled upon an article written by Maria Chiorando (who is a Vegan Journalist) on a website which "specializes" on plant-based news.  This article was both striking and interesting. The article talked about how the UK Parliament is being encouraged by a vegan charity called Veganuary to switch to a plant-based diet in order to save the planet. This charity will be actively working to get the nation's politicians to persuade them to do without dairy and meat in January.

The charity is hoping that if the members of parliament join, they will encourage more people join. To be fair, this is the least they can do! Especially since Veganuary in a statement to Plant Based News said that;

The Government has so far done little to heed the advice of the scientific community, which states that reducing meat and dairy consumption is vital if we are to avert the catastrophic climate change.

What I found most shocking whilst reading this article, was the fact that the minister responsible for climate change, Claire Perry, refused to tell the public to reduce their "consumption of meals like steak and chips". One can't help but find this very ironic! If she doesn't take the necessary steps, then who will?

Rich Hardy who is the Head of Campaigns and Veganuary suggested that a simple step would be to switch to delicious vegan alternatives in the Parliament cafeteria. He also added that this would be a great opportunity for the leader of the UK to lead by example and "show they're serious about tackling climate change".
